Celebrating the Christ Season!
Over the last couple of years, we have started to play more
folk music. Margo and Natalie even led a contingent of us to camp out at Moses
Lake for a week at the Washington Old Time Fiddles Association “jamboree.” Folk music is designed to be accessible, even for
beginners, and brings people together as a community. John Jacob Niles, a folk historian and
musician, came across a disheveled girl singing a song in Appalachia (one of
the prime areas in the country for folk music).
He took the girl’s tune, and a few of the lines of the song he could get
from her, and wrote what today we know as I
Wonder as I Wander. Though the song is not completely historically
accurate, it does capture in a simple graceful way the essence of the birth of
Jesus Christ. The second verse goes like this:
When Mary birthed Jesus ‘twas in a cow’s stall,
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.
But high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall,
And the promise of ages it then did recall.
The song portrays the wonderful humility and humanity of
Jesus. He loved us enough to enter our world as Savior fulfilling over 350
predicted events that were written in the historical Jewish writings known
today as the Old Testament. He was killed on the cross and rose on the 3rd
day from the dead (Read Lee Strobel’s Case
for Christ for more info) providing salvation for all who believe on Him. (The
book of John Chapter 3)
We hope you have a wonderful year. We would love to hear
from you. It has been a fascinating time for us as we see the young adults in
our house growing up and the “little” ones developing more each year. We also hope
you can take this time both to enjoy the blessings received and rest up for the
coming New Year.
All the Best and a Very Merry Christmas!
